    Getting Off The Bottle
    Series: (All)
The New Testament writers saw the transition of little children off of milk and onto solid foods as an apt illustration of spiritual maturity.  But surprisingly, many believers were stunted in their spiritual growth.  This is certainly still true today!
    • Like the Corinthian Christians, to get on the path to spiritual growth we must first identify what is holding us back.
    • We must also understand the purpose and potential God has given to us.
    • Finally, we must learn reliance upon the power of God for all good things that happen in us and through us.

    When Jesus Makes You Gasp!
    Series: (All)
People surely gasped when Jesus touched a man with leprosy.  Luke 5:12-16 People surely gasped when Jesus called a tax collector to be a disciple.  Luke 5:27-32 People surely gasped when Jesus allowed a sinful woman to wash his feet with her hair.  Luke 7:36-39 Jesus knew something about himself that you and I sometimes forget.  Jesus is always more contagious than anything he touches!

    A Good Place to Start
After learning about The Treasure Principle, you may be asking how to get started upon the journey of joyful generosity!  Here is some biblical direction. Our giving to the Lord should be SYSTEMATIC.  There is certainly a place for spontaneous  generosity in the Christian life, but God designed a systematic giving plan to train our hearts to be both thankful and generous.  The biblical concept of tithing is a good place to start.   Lev. 27:30  “A tithe of everything in the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.” Systematic giving is PLANNED.  1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Systematic giving is PROPORTIONAL. Systematic Giving is PURPOSEFUL.  “God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving.” — Randy Alcorn, based on 2 Corinthians 9:11

    Investing in the Next Generation
Timothy was a young man who became a faithful friend and co-worker of the Apostle Paul.  We can see in his life the wonderful influence of his godly mother and grandmother who raised him in the Jewish faith, then set the example of following Jesus.  From them and Paul, we learn some important lessons about investing in the lives of young people. 2 Timothy 1:3-7 & 3:14-17 Investing in the next generation means teaching the Bible.  “...from infancy you have known the holy scriptures…”  (3:15) Investing in the next generation means setting a strong example of faith.  “...your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother … and mother…” (1:5) Investing in the next generation means helping young people discover their own spiritual gifts.  “...be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  (3:17) Investing in the next generation means encouraging young people to become all that God means for them to be.  “...fan into flame the gift of God which is in you…” (1:6)

    Barriers to Eternal Riches
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’”  Luke 12:15 Jesus told a parable which we usually call “The Rich Fool.”  The wealthy farmer in the story exhibited some of the classic barriers to a generous life that invests in heavenly treasures.
    • He consulted only himself.  He had the barrier of self-centeredness.
    • He counted on only himself.  He had the barrier of arrogance.
    • He considered only himself.  He had the barrier of greed.
    • He cared only about this world.  He had the barrier of short-sightedness.
We need to be able to identify the barriers to generosity that arise in our own lives.  These principles will help us overcome them:
    • Heaven, not earth, is our true home.
    • Giving is the only antidote to greed.

    Compounding Joy!
“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete!”   John 15:11 How can joy be compounded in our lives?
    • By recognizing God’s ownership.  Psalm 24:1
    • By becoming a good steward of what God has entrusted to us.  1 Peter 4:10
    • By giving with a joyful heart.  2 Corinthians 9:7
    • By gaining an awareness of how God uses what we give.  2 Corinthians 9:12

    The Treasure Principle
“You can’t take it with you, but you can send it ahead.” Matthew 6:19-21 - “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” For Christians, “treasures” is not a dirty word— when properly understood.
    • Earthly treasures are temporary and come with many temptations.
    • Heavenly treasures  are eternal and share the values of God.
    • There is a connection between how we approach money and possessions and the strength of our spiritual lives.
    • We send our treasures ahead when we invest in the things God values!
“He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”  Jim Elliot Many ideas are based on the book “The Treasure Principle:  Unlocking the Secret of Joyful Giving” by Randy Alcorn.

    Our Hearts Burning Within Us
    Series: (All)
On the afternoon of the first Easter Sunday, two followers of Jesus were walking the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus.  Jesus began walking with them, but they didn’t immediately recognize him.  In a short time, Jesus was able to open their eyes and rekindle their faith.  After he left them, they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”  (Luke 24:32) How are we able to regain or maintain our spiritual fervor?
    • Spend time in the presence of the Living Lord.
    • Study the scriptures for inspiration and understanding.
    • Share with others the truths Christ has revealed.
“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”  Romans 12:11
