How God’s Good Work Gets Done
Nehemiah 3 In our study of Nehemiah, all the material of chapters 1 and 2 has led up to the activity of chapter 3.  Here we are treated to a rather detailed description of the rebuilding process of Jerusalem’s gates and walls, approximately 40 sections in all.  But what might seem tedious at first glance is actually full of wonderful lessons and truths! God’s good work gets done through . . .

The Power of a Shared Burden
Nehemiah 2 In chapter 1 we learned how Nehemiah, the Jewish cupbearer to the king of Persia, learned about the terrible condition of Jerusalem and the returned exiles who were living there.  His heart was broken by the news, and he learned to refocus his priorities on the things that matter most to God.  In chapter 2, Nehemiah began sharing the burden God had laid on his heart.

Refocusing on What Matters to God
Nehemiah 1:1-11 The book of Nehemiah gives us a record of how the wall of Jerusalem was repaired following the time of the Babylonian Exile.  The written account comes from Nehemiah, an official in the court of the Persian King and a respected leader among the Jewish people.  It provides a wealth of historical information, but also some important spiritual lessons about pursuing God’s purpose for our lives and our church.

The Treasure of Your Godly Wisdom
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”  -  James 1:5 Proverbs 2 records the words of Solomon to his son, and to all who would seek to live their lives guided by godly wisdom.
Proverbs 2:1-4 - The word “IF” points us to the conditions necessary for gaining wisdom.
Proverbs 2:5, 9-12 - The word “THEN” points us to the results. Proverbs 2:6-8 - The word “FOR” helps us understand why we should seek wisdom.

The Treasure of the Gospel Message
2 Corinthians 4:7  “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” The Apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth about his ministry of sharing the good news of God’s saving work through Jesus Christ.  He called the gospel message a “treasure” delivered to the world in “jars of clay.”  God’s plan to use frail and imperfect people as His messengers helps to magnify the greatness of His love and power.

    The Treasure of Your Salvation
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Because of his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead  and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.  You are being guarded by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.  You rejoice in this,[ even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials  so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.  Though you have not seen him, you love him; though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:3-9

The Treasure of Your Good Deeds
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.  In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”  1 Timothy 6:18-19
    • Your good deeds make a difference to people around you.
    • Your good deeds make a difference in your own life.
    • Your good deeds make a difference to the heart of God.

    The Treasure of Your Friends
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.  Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
    • Good friends are there through thick and thin.
    • Good friends are kind.
    • Good friends are honest.
    • Good friends bring out the best in each other.
Knowing the qualities of a good friend is important in choosing friends, but even more important is becoming a good friend. Jesus is our greatest role model!

The Great Commission - Matthew 28:16-20
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
