A Father’s Honest Faith
A Father’s Honest Faith - Mark 9:14-27  Immediately after the Transfiguration, Jesus came down the mountain and encountered a father seeking help for his son who suffered from dangerous and debilitating seizures caused by an evil spirit.  We learn some valuable lessons from this un-named parent.
  • In the midst of fear, sorrow and confusion, he came to Jesus.
  • He came expectantly, though guardedly.
  • He came boldly, though humbly.
The father’s response to Jesus is one we all can learn from:  “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.”  It is an honest confession of spiritual weakness and imperfect faith—one which opens our lives to the power of God.

The Forgotten Four Remember Their People
The Forgotten Four Remember Their People  An Act of Desperation (2 Kings 7:3-4) We live in a nation and a world full of desperate people.  Sometimes we feel like those who are forgotten and unheard, as well.  The Joyful Discovery (7:5-8) We are faced with a decision whether to be selfish or generous with the blessings we have received.  The Right Decision (7:9-11) Jesus teaches us the right thing to do, but we must make the decision to be obedient.  What kind of citizens will we be of our nation, the world, and the kingdom of God?

    The Mountain of Transfiguration
Matthew 17:1-9 The Transfiguration of Jesus took place one week after Peter’s confession of faith at Caesarea Philippi.  Three of the disciples accompanied Jesus up to a mountain top where they witnessed him shining like the sun and talking with the Old Testament heroes, Moses and Elijah.  The unique experience helped the disciples—and us—understand who Jesus truly is.
    • It shows us Jesus’ divine glory.
    • It clarifies his unique mission.
    • It attests to his absolute authority.

    The Mountain of Prayer
“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.”    Matthew 14:22
    • Sincere prayer arises out of real life situations.
    • Fervent prayer requires dismissing some things that may distract us or detract from our connection with God.
    • Effective prayer always looks ahead toward what God has for us next.

    The Mountain of Proclamation
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down.  His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying …” Matthew 5:1-2 Our “mountain of proclamation” is any place and any time we have an opportunity to share with others the good news of God’s love through Jesus Christ. Why is it so important that this be our priority?
    • The world is full of lost and hurting people.
    • We have experienced the grace of God and have been entrusted with the message of hope that can transform lives.
    • It is only through hearing and understanding that people are drawn to a saving faith in God through Christ.

    The Mountain of Temptation
Matthew 4:1-11 Just after his baptism, and before beginning his public ministry, Jesus followed the leadership of the Holy Spirit into the wilderness.  It was there, after forty days of fasting, that the devil presented Jesus with temptations which could undermine his divine calling.
    • “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (v.3)
    • “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down…” (v.6)
    • “All this I will give to you if you will bow down and worship me.” (v.9)
The final encounter with Satan came on a mountaintop.  From there, Jesus triumphed over temptation, remaining the sinless Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.  With his example before us and strength within us, we too can be victorious over temptation and sin!
