For some Christians, it is more difficult to come to grips with the humanity of Jesus than his divinity. But among his sayings from the cross are words that reflect both the physical and spiritual anguish he faced.
I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)
- This statement by Jesus was a fulfillment of prophecy.
- It was also a reminder of his humanity, and the reality of the physical suffering he endured on our behalf.
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34)
- This statement acknowledges Jesus’ mental and spiritual agony.
- It speaks to the consequences of sin, not the character of God.
- It also calls attention to the fulfilled prophecy of Psalm 22.
The anguish Jesus experienced on the cross was real. He endured it for our sake, offering it as a gift of love so that we might be saved. If you repent of your sins and put your faith in him, his death for you will not be in vain!
